Pressure-locked or welded grating — how to choose
We recommend pressure-locked grating as the default solution — the weld-free connection allows full galvanizing and higher corrosion resistance. Welded grating is chosen where price and lower weight matter at typical support spans.
Both designs have an identical mesh geometry; they differ in how the bearing bar is joined to the cross bar. In welded grating the joint is made by resistance welding, in pressure-locked grating by pressing the cross bar into notches in the bearing bar under pressure, without a weld.
Parameters of both types
| Criterion | Pressure-locked | Welded |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | cold pressed | resistance welded |
| Weight 33×33 | 21.8 kg/m² | 19.5 kg/m² |
| Price | +20–25% | lower |
| Grades | S235JR, galvanized, 1.4404 | S235JR, galvanized |
| Application | chemicals, food industry, outdoors | industrial walkways |
For wet and sloping areas the anti-slip version is a good additional choice, and for wheeled and forklift loads — heavy-duty HD grating.
Panel weight formula
m = (b × l / 1,000,000) × q × n
b, l — dimensions in mm · q — unit weight in kg/m² by type and mesh · n — number of panels. Calculate it for your dimensions in the quotation calculator or check the permissible load and deflection in the load calculator.

FAQ
Which steel grating for a 1500 mm support span?
For a 1500 mm support span and pedestrian loading of 5 kN/m², a 40 × 2 mm or 40 × 3 mm bearing bar in a 33 × 33 mm mesh is used. For forklift loads, individual calculations are required — check the exact value in the load calculator.
How much does 33 × 33 mm steel grating weigh?
Welded grating made of 30 × 2 mm bars in a 33 × 33 mm mesh weighs about 19.5 kg/m². A 1000 × 1000 mm panel is therefore about 19.5 kg, and a 1000 × 6000 mm sheet about 117 kg — for other dimensions calculate in the quotation calculator.
What is the difference between hot-dip and electrolytic galvanizing?
Hot-dip galvanizing gives a 70–85 µm coating and a service life of 25–50 years in corrosivity category C3. Electrolytic coating is 5–15 µm and is suitable only for dry indoor environments.
Do you cut gratings to size with edge banding?
Yes. Cutting to size, flat-bar edging and cut-outs for columns and pipes are made from DXF, DWG or PDF files. The standard lead time is 5–7 working days.
Ask for a selection
You do not have to calculate it yourself — the technical department will confirm the selection based on the support span, the load and the working environment of the grating. See also the full steel grating catalogue.
